Common Symptoms of Endometrial Cancer
Endometrial cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the lining of a woman's uterus, known as the endometrium. It is sometimes called uterine cancer, or uterine endometrial cancer.
Symptoms can include:
- Pain while urinating
- Pain during sexual intercourse
- Discomfort throughout the pelvic area
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding, spotting, or vaginal discharge
- Unexplained weight loss
As with all types of cancer, early diagnosis can help improve both your outcome from endometrial cancer treatment and your long-term survival rate.
Diagnosing Endometrial Cancer
- If you suspect you have endometrial cancer, it's important to seek medical help right away. Your primary doctor or your gynecologist may prescribe tests to diagnose cancer of the uterus, such as:A pelvic exam by your gynecologist
- Blood work
- Transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS) to check for masses within the uterus, and/or thickening of the uterine walls
- Biopsy sampling of endometrial tissue
- Dilation and curettage (D&C) to open the cervix and obtain tissue from inside the uterus
You may also have diagnostic imaging, such as a CT scan or MRI as part of the diagnostic process.

Here at Northern Westchester Hospital, our oncologists, radiologists, and surgeons work together to provide you with a comprehensive cancer treatment plan.
Endometrial Cancer Surgery at NWH
Our gynecologic surgeons use leading-edge, minimally-invasive technologies to treat endometrial cancer.
With the help of the da Vinci robotic surgery system, your NWH surgeon can perform complex procedures using small incisions. Our robotic-assisted system includes high-definition 3D cameras to provide your surgical team with clear imaging, while the sophisticated instruments enhance precision.
If your oncologist has recommended removal of your uterus (hysterectomy) as part of your endometrial cancer treatment plan, you may be a candidate for minimally-invasive surgery.
Advantages of Robotic Surgery
Before the development of robot-assisted surgical techniques, surgeons performed hysterectomies by making a large, horizontal incision across the patient's lower stomach. Robotic surgery allows our surgeons to completely remove the uterus, cervix, ovaries and fallopian tubes through a few small incisions in the abdomen.
The potential benefits of a robot-assisted hysterectomy when compared to an open hysterectomy include:
- Minimal post-operative scarring
- Lower risk of infections and blood loss
- Shorter hospital stay
- Quicker recovery
- Less pain
- Faster return to normal, everyday activities
Patients who require additional staging for specific sub-types of endometrial cancer may also have dissection of the pelvic lymph nodes. This can be completed using minimally-invasive laparoscopic surgical techniques here at NWH.
By using cutting-edge technologies, our committed medical professionals are making recovery from endometrial cancer treatment and surgery faster and safer than ever.
