Northern Westchester Hospital offers patients the most advanced minimally-invasive procedures to treat various conditions of the lungs, pulmonary system and chest wall, including lung cancer, esophageal cancer, as well as benign thoracic conditions, such as reflux.
The thoracic surgery team at Northern Westchester Hospital performs operations on a wide range of patients who benefit from having a minimally invasive procedure due to their age, the location of the abnormality, or lifestyle factors.
Minimally Invasive Robot-Assisted Procedures
Our thoracic surgery program, led by Dr. Darren I. Rohan, uses the innovative technology of the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System to perform the most minimally invasive and life-saving procedures. The sophisticated da Vinci instruments allow surgeons to make the smallest possible incisions, which can reduce post-surgery discomfort and lower risk of infections. Such minimally invasive operations have been shown to result in shorter hospital stays when compared to surgeries performed using conventional, invasive surgical techniques.
Smaller incisions, quicker healing
In robot-assisted surgery, your thoracic surgeon uses small high-definition cameras with small surgical instruments. This eliminates the need for large incisions that can result in excessive blood loss and complications related to the healing of large wounds.
The surgeon guides the robotic instruments using 3D imaging to achieve an exceptionally clear view of the surgical site. The enhanced visibility, smaller instruments and increased range of motion allows your surgeon to perform highly sophisticated procedures on diseased tissue while sparing healthy tissue.
Robot-assisted thoracic surgery with the da Vinci Surgical System can treat illnesses impacting the organs and tissues inside the chest, with lower risk of infections, less blood loss and quicker healing.
